Senior Cancer Registrar

Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital

Introduction:

Under general supervision of the Manager of Tumor Registry, Assists manager with the American College of Surgeon, Commission on Cancer Standards, National Association Programs of Breast Centers, NAPBC Standards to assure all appropriate guidelines are in compliance. Keep abreast of all changes from the COC, analyzes, abstracts, and codes selected cases using ICD–0, ICD-10, STORE/ FORDS, SSDI/SEER in the Cancer Registry Database and prepare cases for the Massachusetts Cancer Registry. Utilizes AJCC Staging, 8th Edition, Multiple Primaries, and the Mass Cancer Registry manuals.

Job Description:

  • Incumbent establishes own work plan, priorities and works within broad scope of position to assure
  • Case-finding – Identifies cases to be registered, including malignancies on the reportable list and cases selected by the medical staff.
  • Accession Register – Analyzes, abstracts for accuracy and codes selected cases using several manuals: ICD-O, ICD – 10, STORE/FORDS, SSDI/SEER, AJCC Staging, 8th Edition, Multiple Primaries.
  • Assists in maintaining computerized data base to meet needs of the users.
  • Performs data entry of abstracts into the IMPAC Cancer Registry Database.
  • Preparing abstracts for submission to Mass Cancer Registry and the National Cancer Database
  • Assists physicians in special projects, Quality review of abstracts, Quality Improvement studies.
  • Maintains hospital and departmental policies.
  • Responsible for preparing for the Oncology Conferences, identifying new patients, staging and treatment.
  • Assists with Quality Assurance, reviewing the completed abstracts with the physicians for accuracy and staging.
  • Review control reports; an update status of disease, and subsequent treatment in the database.
  • Assists with follow-up and treatment letters.
  • Attends meetings and educational conferences, assuming personal responsibility for maintaining ceu’s
  • Professional development and on-going education to maintain proficiency.
  • Assists manager with American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer Survey
  • Assists manager with the American College of Surgeons, National Accreditation Programs Breast Centers Survey
  • Responsible for completion of special studies from American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer (COC)
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Duties require a broad knowledge of medical terminology and specialized knowledge of cancer morphology including physiology, statistics, anatomy and biology, histology, cytology and lab work.
  • Knowledgeable of the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer Standards
  • Use and understanding of the computer. Create reports in Excel, Graphs, etc. Knowledge of coding using ICD-O, ICD – 10. Has the ability to interpret radiology reports, operative reports, and
  • pathology and physicians notes
  • Ability to work independently and have above average judgment making skills required.
  • Detail oriented, conscientious.
  • Ability to work independently, solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization may exist.

Preferred Qualifications:

Associate Degree in Allied Health, Bachelor Degree preferred

Associate Degree in Allied Health, Bachelor Degree preferred
National Tumor Registry Certification
Experience (Type & Length): Minimum Two – 5 years, experience as a Certified Cancer Registrar.
Demonstrated clinical competence and in-depth knowledge of specialty area. The incumbent will be expected to maintain current certification and meet the continuing education requirements.
Applicants must demonstrate the ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Certification/Licensure:  Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) is required
Software/Hardware:  Proficiency with tumor registry abstracting software, as well as, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
Other: It is not reasonable to anticipate that the incumbent will have occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens in the course of his/her regularly scheduled activities as an associate of Brockton Hospital.
