Morton Hospital is a 152 bed hospital in Taunton, MA, close to routes 495/140/44. Full time, primary CTR position, reporting to the Director of HIM. Hours are flexible.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will:

  • Be responsible to work collaboratively with physicians and hospital staff in managing all functions of the Cancer Registry.

  • Collect accurate and complete data for cancer patients; maintain and update the Cancer Registry databases to meet the requirements of the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer Standards and state and national registry regulations.

  • Facilitate the Cancer Case conferences by working collaboratively with physicians in preparing materials for the conferences; provides the necessary notifications as needed; Works with the Cancer Committee chair to facilitate quarterly meetings.

Required Qualifications:

Certified Tumor Registrar certification required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Certified Tumor Registrar with prior experience.

Education Qualifications:

Associates degree or equivalent in the health care field. Medical terminology, anatomy & physiology a must; knowledge of computer software systems; good interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.

Cancer Registrar
Emerson Hospital

Job Description:

This role reports directly to the Manager of Cancer Services and works closely with an additional registrar and all of the oncology staff. Other duties include:

  • Responsible for all activities related to the Cancer Registry.

  • Organizes and maintains tumor registry data.

  • Manages data submissions to state and ACoS.

  • Coordinates weekly cancer panel meetings and monthly cancer committee meetings.

  • Assists with activities related to cancer center accreditation.

Interacting with physicians, patients and other hospital staff, the Cancer Registrar is responsible for administering a cancer program to meet all the requirements of the American College of Surgeons.  Other duties include:

  • Using a computerized system, participates in and/or provides Cancer Registry statistics to appropriate requestor according to department information release procedure.

  • Assists ACS staff in conducting Look Good Feel Better program, Daffodil Days, etc.

  • Facilitates the scheduling of patient cases for presentation for weekly cancer panel meetings according to department procedures.

  • Manages clerical duties related to the cancer panels. Works with registrar assistant to accomplish this for Thoracic, Breast, and Multi-specialty cancer panels.

  • Maintains the Cancer Registry in compliance with the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer Standards and the state and national Registry regulations for data collection/reporting.

  • Identifies cases, abstracts data and updates Cancer Registry data promptly according to ACoS and MA state Cancer Registry standards.

  • Maintains follow-up on all active cases annually so as to attain a minimum of a 90% follow-up success rate.

  • Understands and utilizes computerized registry data system (Impac) to the fullest extent.

  • Assists with preparation of agenda and minutes for Cancer Committee meetings in conjunction with Cancer Services Manager; attends all committee meetings (4 times per year).

  • Prepares and distributes, in conjunction with the Cancer Committee Chairperson, and Cancer Services Manager, a comprehensive analysis and report of disease specific diagnosis, treatment and outcome from Registry data, annually.

  • Assists Cancer Services Manager in cancer programs, as needed.

  • Participates in professional education activities at local, state and national levels and applies knowledge gained to registry function.

  • Assists Cancer Center staff in managing outreach, education and prevention events.

  • Interfaces tactfully and professionally at all times with patients, their families, physicians, and other staff members.

  • Handles medical records and cancer registry records with complete confidentiality, confining discussion of patient/physician information to hospital related business 100% of the time.

  • Other duties as assigned from time to time.

Required Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: minimum of 2 years of college education related to a health field

  • Experience: 3+ years of cancer registry experience License and/or

  • Certification: Certified Tumor Registrar certification required

  • Skills: Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills and Microsoft office products experience required.

Job Description:

Under general direction of the Director, Oncology Services, and according to established objectives and procedures, codes and abstracts tumor data, follows up on cancer patients, and performs long and short term patient care evaluation studies. Responsible for the maintenance of the registry for ACOS accreditation.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  • In accordance with American College of Surgeons and National Cancer Society guidelines, maintains registry files and logs of all Hospital cancer cases. Conducts annual lifetime follow-up on patients in the Cancer Registry by contacting physician or patient. Enters all follow-up information into computerized registry system in a timely manner.

  • Codes and abstracts cancer-related data (i.e., summarizes patient's hospital record including demographic data, diagnostic procedures, date of diagnosis, histological diagnosis, and treatment). Reports all new cancer cases to the Cancer Incidence Registry of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts through the computerized registry system.

  • Assists the Cancer Committee in the performance of Cancer Program activities. Records minutes of meetings, arranges conferences, and performs studies as requested. Conducts long and short term patient evaluation studies. Prepares regular and special statistical reports and analyses. Prepares annual report of activity.

  • Compiles requests for data from the registry on cancer patient population and related statistics for Hospital planning, administration, and any internal healthcare related department.

  • In consultation with supervisor and ACOS guidelines, develops tumor registry standards and goals. Remains abreast of developments in the field of tumor registry by pursuing a program of self development and participating in educational and research activities of the National Cancer Registrar Association.

Knowledge, Experience, & Other Job Requirements:

  • Level of knowledge equivalent to that ordinarily acquired through completion of an Associate's Degree in medical record technology or nursing. Must be a Certified Tumor Registrar.

  • Six to twelve months of experience.

Cancer Registrar II - Telework possible!

Job Description:

Under the general supervision of the DF/PCC Site Manager or Administrative Director, this position is responsible for:

  • The identification of patients with cancer, analysis and interpretation of the cancer site, extent of disease, treatment and follow-up of such patients.

  • Data collection will meet the standards of the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons, the Massachusetts State Cancer Registry, DF/PCC Disease Centers and DF/PCC clinicians, researchers and administrators.

  • Identifies and registers cancer cases referred from Pathology, Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology and other sources using manual and computerized means.

  • Uses reportable lists and applies skillful judgment in complicated case identification.

  • Runs computerized casefinding program to download new cases. Performs quality editing of cases entered through the casefinding program.

  • Differentiates between and categorizes new cancer cases, recurrent cancer cases and multiple primary cases.

  • Reviews and analyzes hospital records, computerized reports and other medical reports for relevant cancer data; determines and classifies demographics, primary site, histology, stage and treatment on all cancer sites.

  • Uses the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-O) to code site and histology. Uses the American Joint Committee on Cancer Staging System, SEER General and Collaborative Staging, and the National Cancer Institute Staging systems to classify the stage and extent of the disease.

  • Applies skillful judgment and knowledge of current trends to collect accurate and complete treatment information. Contacts physicians and other health facilities for complete treatment information if needed.

  • Collects additional data elements as needed for Disease Centers. Compiles medical abstracts based on retrieved and classified data. Uses Windows applications and interfaces with Information Systems for data input, analysis and retrieval.

  • Researches and prepares complicated follow-up histories for cancer patients, documenting disease status, condition and treatment for the duration of the patient's life span.

  • Communicates by telephone and mail with physicians, hospitals, and other health institutions in order to obtain necessary follow-up information.

  • Refer requests from patients to appropriate resources (i.e. patient advocates, physician referral service, and medical records). Uses Internet resources to obtain follow-up on patients (Social Security Death Index, telephone directories, and newspaper obituaries). Works with Senior Cancer Registrar to coordinate follow-up letter production.

  • Coordinates sequencing of letter generation and processing of follow-up letter returns.

  • Responsible for collecting, analyzing and coding patterns of recurrence in cancer patients treated initially for cure, with identification of sites and dates of recurrent cancer and subsequent treatment; determines and codes cause of death in patients who have expired.

  • Responsible for one or more departmental support activities including obtaining medical records, sorting follow-up reports, ordering office supplies, maintenance of office equipment, data entry and other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum High School Diploma plus some college courses

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred.

  • Must have formal course work or knowledge of anatomy and physiology or equivalent, and medical terminology.
