Job Description:

The Certified Tumor Registrar is responsible for the collection, management and analysis of data on cancer patients, and for reporting these cases to the ACOS, National Cancer Data Base, Maine Cancer Incidence Surveillance System. Tumor Registrars work closely with physicians, hospital administrators and health care practitioners to maintain ongoing records of the cancer patient's history, diagnosis, treatment, and outcome. This information is used for education, lifetime patient follow-up and research. Reviews patient's medical record, abstracts and codes information, such as demographic characteristics, history and extent of disease, diagnostic procedures and treatment, and enters data into computer. Contacts discharged patients, their families, and physicians to maintain registry with follow-up information, such as quality of life and length of survival of cancer patients. Prepares statistical reports, narrative reports and graphic presentations of tumor registry data for use by hospital staff, researchers, and other users of registry data.

Required Qualifications:

Minimum of a 2-year associate degree in Health Information Management. Certified Tumor Registrar as credentialed by the National Cancer Registrars association. This requires two years of registry experience and successful completion of the CTR exam OR a Registered Health Information Technician as credentialed by the American Health Information Management Association and successful completion of the national exam.

Job Description:

The Certified Tumor Registrar will work under general supervision, this position identifies, registers, and follows up on all patients diagnosed and/or treated for malignancy according to criteria set by the Tufts Medical Center Cancer Committee and the American College of Surgeons (ACoS). Maintains a data system for storage, retrieval and report writing of cancer patient data. This position also maintains the Cancer Registry database in accordance with the current Commission on Cancer (CoC) Data Quality Standards and by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Cancer Registry. The Tumor Registrar will perform all duties in the Cancer Registry, which include abstracting, case finding, follow up of cancer patients, compiling reports for physicians and administration when requested, and coordinating all cancer conferences and cancer committee meetings.

Required Qualifications:

  • Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) certification is required

  • Knowledge and skills obtained through an associate degree program specializing in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and medical records technology

  • One year of hospital-based Cancer Registry experience

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and a computerized cancer registry (METRIQ), Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, all aspects of organizing a Tumor Board Conference, and knowledge of standards as set forth by the American College of Surgeons for an approved Academic Cancer Program

  • The ability to review and analyze patient data while maintaining patient confidentiality

Job Description:

Work in conjunction with other State Registry staff and contractors to meet NPCR and NAACCR national standards for data quality, completeness and timeliness. Duties include but are not limited to ensuring the quality and complete processing of incoming data, consolidating duplicate records, assist in Pathology and Death Clearance, and maintain tracking systems and logs.

This position will also provide training to reporting facility as well as provide technical support for reporting facilities and other cancer programs. Oversight of contracted personnel is expected and supervision of other staff is possible. Development of policies and procedures as well as making needed revisions will be required. Participation in special studies and research is likely. Current research includes linkage with All Payers Claims Database (APCD).

Required Qualifications:

Certification as a tumor registrar (CTR) is required. Eight years combination of education, training, and/or experience in a cancer registry.

Preferred Qualifications:

Central registry experience is a plus.

Education Qualifications:

Some post-secondary education is preferred.
